Learning Design Practitioner Microcredential: Learning Bites

This learning bite explores a learning designer’s role as an investigator. LDs need strong research and analytical skills, natural curiosity, and a willingness to problem-solve. These attributes and skills allow them to evaluate learning contexts under any circumstances effectively.
This learning bite examines a learning designer’s role as a planner. The reality is that LDs need to be process-driven, thorough, and pay attention to details. These attributes and skills allow them to effectively plan a learning experience with clear expectations for all involved in the design and development.
This learning bite explores a learning designer’s role as a curator. An LD must have a sound understanding of learning principles and how they relate to different learning modes. This knowledge, combined with copy editing and substantive editing skills, will underpin the creation of learning experiences in storyboard formats. The ability to construct stories and reframe narratives will bring the storyboards to life for learners.
This learning bite examines a learning designer’s role as a designer. By understanding the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and ensuring that they always stay up to date with the latest developments in technology and applications, an LD can publish their expertly crafted learning experiences without compromising on quality. We must also never forget that an LD must first and foremost design inclusive learning environments, always factoring in accessibility.
This learning bite reflects on how learning design is not a solo endeavor. An LD will need not only to be accountable to themselves but also to others. Collaborating with stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to give and receive feedback.
This learning bite examines a learning designer's role as an educator. An LD must push through any imposter syndrome and fully embrace the call to guide the teaching through their designs. Often LDs are pivotal to ensuring learning outcomes are sound and can be sufficiently measured through assessment processes.

Success stories

Andy

At first, I wasn't sure I would have time to complete this on top of my job but the portfolio approach to submission tasks really helped. I was able to submit work I had already done which saved time and reinforced that I have been on the right track!

Laure

I wasn't sure at first if I had the skills to be LD but once I was in the microcredential I realised I was well positioned as a graphic designer already.

Crush any reservations NOW!

“I don't have time to upskill.”

We know! This is why we have made this microcredential incredibly PRACTICAL. For each Learning Bite, you are asked to complete a small Knowledge Check and provided an optional portfolio task with practical templates.

“I can't work for free but I need to practise and build my confidence.”

EXACTLY why we created optional PORTFOLIO tasks with practical templates. You will walk away with evidence that you can use when applying for jobs.

“I need stability - I am scared of working for myself.”

Totally get it. If you are just starting out there may be a period where you are freelancing to gain experience and then this can be daunting. Completing this microcred is really the FIRST step! Our team can point you in the right direction of resources that can help if you are actually going to move to a freelance worklife!

What we DO KNOW is that demand for Learning Designers is ever increasing, so if you are a rock star, getting work won't be a problem.

“I’m too old for a career change.”

NEVER! Don't let this unhelpful belief hold you from growing and evolving! Now is the time to upskill in the digital world - before VR is satuating our living rooms.

“I’m not techy enough.”

Sure… we all think that at times. However, there has never been an easier time to get into Learning Design as so many platforms and Learning Management Systems (LMSs) have automated their functions. You really need to know some basic HTML and CSS and the rest is done by the system or web experts.

“I don’t believe I can do it.”

We all have our doubts sometimes… that old ‘imposter syndrome’ rarely discriminates. But we KNOW that once you enroll, you will feel inspired and confident to complete our Learning Design microcredential! Then, you will have ANOTHER amazing tool in your toolbox to whip out in professional settings. Regardless, if you are ready to transition or not.

Crush any reservations NOW!

“I don't have time to upskill.”

We know! This is why we have made this microcredential incredibly PRACTICAL. For each module, you can COOK (follow the task) or COLLECT (submit something you have already done). As long as it covers the Learning Outcome, we will assess it!

“I only know how to teach… Not sure I could actually leave teaching!”

No need to leave teaching, we are just showing you what else you are capable of! This microcredential will help you level-up your digital skills and open up more opportunities as the education continues to evolve!

Testimonials

Charlotte Morgan

Thank you for providing me the opportunity to take part in your Learning Designer course. I really enjoyed it and learnt a lot about Learning Design and the time and effort it takes to produce high quality adult learning material. What I loved most about the course was the many additional resources to support the insights from you and your team. I liked the layout of the course and the creative freedom in the assignments. I’d be really interested in the Learning Design Leader course in the future.

Jenna Hutton

I found the Oppida Learning Design Practitioner course a valuable learning experience. The clear through-line of a Learning Designer’s role from beginning to end highlights the need for this position in education today. The content is clear, concise, and engaging and is coupled with assignments that help you put your newly learnt knowledge into practice.

Bree Yates

I recently had the pleasure of studying with Oppida and completing the Learning Design Practitioners course. The industry expert instructors were actively engaged with the course by staying in touch with the students, answering any questions, and providing constructive feedback on all assignments. Working in the Elearning industry but coming from a Graphic Design background, I feel that this course has backed my prior knowledge but has also made me feel more confident in my theoretical knowledge of a Learning Designer. The course provides you with an excellent understanding of how to design a modern and engaging program!

Bianca Muteve

I'd just like to say the Learning Design Practitioner credential has been pivotal to my success in the world of Learning Design. I was looking for the perfect course to transition into a Learning Designer role and even considering going back to university for an education degree. It was only until a colleague (Natalia) reached out and told me a bit about Oppida that I decided to drop the idea. I've since secured a fantastic entry role at a major university and will be moving on to start an official Learning Designer job in a few weeks! I am so much more confident and credit my knowledge and skills to this credential. I'd be lost otherwise!
